Strike a Goal This Summer!

Hello Harmony Pugs family!

Summer is here, and this quarter has been full of puppy milestones, road trips, dog show adventures, birthday celebrations, and lots of happy updates from our Harmony families. This issue is all about keeping our pugs safe during the warmer months, sharing a few important health reminders, celebrating our puppies settling into their new homes, and adding a little summer fun along the way.

With sunshine, soccer vibes, beach days, and pug snuggles, we are officially calling this our “Strike a Goal This Summer” edition.

As always, thank you for being part of the Harmony Pugs family. I truly love hearing from everyone and seeing these sweet babies grow, thrive, and be loved.

Summer Safety for Pugs: Heat Matters
Pugs are wonderful little companions, but summer heat is not their friend. Because pugs are a brachycephalic breed, meaning they have shorter noses and flatter faces, they can have a harder time cooling themselves compared to longer-nosed breeds.

A few summer reminders:

Signs of overheating can include heavy panting, drooling, weakness, bright red gums, vomiting, confusion, wobbliness, or collapse. If your pug seems overheated or “not right,” move them to a cooler area and contact your veterinarian or emergency clinic right away.

Pugs do not need to be summer athletes. Sometimes the safest adventure is air conditioning, a cool mat, and a snack.

Heartworm Prevention: A Year-Round Must

Heartworm prevention is one of the most important pieces of routine care for our dogs. Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes, and in warm climates, mosquitoes can be active for much of the year.

Please talk with your veterinarian about the best heartworm prevention plan for your pug and give it consistently as directed. Prevention is much easier, safer, and less stressful than treatment.

Even mostly indoor dogs need protection. Those quick potty breaks, backyard moments, and travel days still count.

New World Screwworm: What Pet Owners Should Know

You may have seen recent news about New World screwworm. While it is not something to panic about, it is something pet owners should be aware of.

New World screwworm is a parasitic fly. The female fly is attracted to open wounds or moist body openings and can lay eggs there. When the larvae hatch, they feed on living tissue, which can cause a wound to worsen quickly.

Recent confirmed detections have involved animals in the United States, including livestock and dogs. That makes awareness and early action reasonable for pet owners, especially those who travel, attend outdoor events, visit rural areas, live near livestock, or have dogs with scratches, hot spots, skin irritation, or healing wounds.

What to watch for:

• A wound that gets worse instead of better
• A bad smell from a wound
• Drainage or bleeding
• Swelling or pain
• Your dog acting uncomfortable or unusually bothered by an area
• Maggots or movement in a wound, ear, nose, eye, or skin fold

For pug families, this is also a good reminder to keep up with routine pug checks. Look at wrinkles, ears, paws, tails, skin folds, and any little scratches or irritated spots. If something looks suspicious, contact your veterinarian quickly.

The goal is not fear. The goal is awareness, good wound care, and fast veterinary attention if something looks wrong. 

*For what it's worth, I have been on 4 interstate trips in the last 2 months, 3 by air and 1 driving through multiple state border checkpoints and I have not been asked for any health documentation for my pug.

Pug Finds I’m Loving

A few pug-friendly items worth sharing this summer:

Cool Coats and Cooling Mats

These can be great tools for supervised summer use, especially after short potty breaks, during travel, or at outdoor events. They are not a replacement for common sense in hot weather, but they can help keep pugs more comfortable. Check out Cool Beds 4 Pets! Developed by a pug owner - Cool Beds 4 Pets

Fluff Troughs

Fluff Troughs are one of my favorite pug finds. They are elevated, breed-friendly feeding dishes that can make mealtime more comfortable for many flat-faced dogs. They are also easy to clean and come in fun colors.  Another excellent product developed by a pug owner for her angel baby, Pork Chop <3 

Training Tip: Try Trick Dog!

Last quarter we talked about Canine Good Citizen, and this quarter we are adding a little fun with Trick Dog!

Trick training is a wonderful way to build confidence, teamwork, focus, and connection with your pug. It is also a great indoor activity for summer when it is too hot for long walks or outdoor adventures.

For AKC Novice Trick Dog, dogs perform 10 tricks from the Novice list for an approved evaluator. If your dog already has a CGC certificate or title on record with AKC, they may be able to earn Novice Trick Dog with “CGC + 5,” meaning the CGC counts toward 5 of the required tricks.

Easy tricks to start with:

• Sit
• Shake
• Spin
• Touch
• Find it
• Paws up
• Crawl
• Fetch
• Tunnel
• Balance on a low surface

Keep sessions short, happy, and full of praise. Pugs are smart, funny, food-motivated little dogs, and they often love having a job — especially when snacks are involved.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is having fun, building confidence, and giving your pug a chance to show off that big personality.

Puppy News: Harmony Pugs Across the Map

All of the puppies are doing amazing in their new homes, and that makes my heart so happy!

This litter has spread Harmony Pugs love across the country — from Oregon to Iowa, New York City, and right here in Texas. Watching puppies leave is always bittersweet, but seeing them so loved, spoiled, and settled into their families is the best feeling.

To all of our newest Harmony families: Thank you for loving these babies so well. Please keep the updates, photos, and funny little pug stories coming. I truly love watching them grow and seeing each puppy become exactly who they were meant to be.

Izzie’s Adventures: Georgia, Training & the Road to Vermont

Izzie has been busy with training, dog shows, and a trip to Georgia. Every outing is helping her gain confidence, maturity, and experience, and I am so proud of how she is coming along.

Next up, Izzie and I are heading to Vermont for the Tunbridge shows! The Vermont Scenic Circuit Dog Shows will take place from July 9 to July 12, 2026, at the historic Tunbridge Fairgrounds located on Route 110 in Tunbridge, Vermont. It looks like a big entry, so it should be a wonderful opportunity for her to be out, learn, practice, and continue growing as a show girl.

Dog shows are about so much more than ribbons. They are about teamwork, conditioning, patience, socialization, and celebrating the breed we love. Izzie is still learning and building experience, but she is doing it with that sweet little Harmony Pugs sparkle.

A big shout out to our group conformation trainer, Jo Lynne, she is so knowledgeable and patient!!

Pug of the Month: Tink

This quarter’s Pug of the Month is Tink!

Tink is such a wonderful example of everything we love about pugs — sweet, expressive, full of personality, and absolutely impossible not to adore. Pugs have a way of filling a home with joy, noise, snorts, opinions, and unconditional love, and Tink does all of that beautifully.

Hopefully I am not missing anyone, but if I did, please know every Harmony pug is loved and celebrated. I always love seeing birthday photos and updates, so please keep them coming!

Trivia Answer from Last Issue

Last issue’s question was:

What is the name of the pug that saved the life of a royal prince, leading the breed to become associated with a royal house?

The answer is Pompey!

According to pug history and legend, Pompey belonged to William the Silent, Prince of Orange. When danger approached, Pompey barked and alerted the sleeping prince, helping save his life. Because of this brave little pug, the breed became closely associated with the royal House of Orange.

So while last issue may have made it sound like a whole group of heroic pugs, the famous hero was actually one loyal pug — Pompey!  What a great name idea! :)
